Comfortable Couples
The reason it’s so hard to break bad habits one at a time is because they’re synergistic.
You usually don’t escape them by removing a single habit, but by changing the whole environment that supports it.
Getting high is fun. Playing video games is fun. But comfort compounds. Especially in relationships, where even sex can become a stabilizer, keeping you with someone who doesn’t really push you forward.
You know what I mean: the comfortable relationship where you’re both just kind of existing. Even though you both want something more, you end up enabling each other’s bad behavior.
You don’t judge each other because if you did, they’d start judging you. To avoid that, you let their bad behavior slide, and they let yours slide.
You’re comfortable, but ultimately unhappy.
